Grit, Gravel, and Good Times at Thunderbolts 2025
2 May by Lizzie Smith
For those who thrive on adventure (and aren’t afraid of a little mud), the annual Thunderbolts Adventure returned with its legendary mix of brutal climbs, breathtaking scenery, and plenty of good vibes. Taking place on April 26-27, riders tackled three adrenaline-fueled courses, each weaving through the rugged beauty of Gloucester, NSW.
🚴 The Monument: 230km with a staggering 5,000vm of climbing—because who doesn’t love some pain?
⛺ The Overnighter: The same grueling course, stretched over two days with a much-needed pub stop at Moonan Flat.
🐎 The Colt: A “short and sweet” 92km ride with 1,600vm—perfect for those who prefer their suffering in moderation. Easts riders Stuart McDougall, Bevan Towning, and Jen Benson took on this challenge, proving that grit and determination run strong in their ranks.
Monument Mayhem
Jon Odams powered through The Monument in a jaw-dropping sub-9-hour finish, proving that superhuman endurance is, in fact, real. He was chased down by Jason English in 2nd place, and Ben Spenceley rounding out the podium in 3rd.
Meanwhile, The Overnighter riders had their own battle—one not just against the course, but against the torrential rain that decided to crash the party on Saturday night. Camping, river crossings, and an epic 30km descent into Bowman River Valley made for a ride to remember (or a ride to recover from).
Saturday Night Shenanigans
Of course, no Thunderbolts event is complete without a celebration. As weary riders rolled into The Avon Valley Inn, DJ Robbie Alan made sure their legs weren’t the only things moving. A night of music, stories, and well-earned cheers wrapped up an unforgettable weekend.
Save the Date for 2026!
Mark Anzac Day weekend in your calendars because this madness isn’t going anywhere. Thunderbolts Adventure will be back, ready to challenge, thrill, and reward those brave enough to take it on.
